AWFC Charity cheque

Shirt helps two charities

Bruce and Thistle are very happy to support the local Armed Forces Wives Club.

312 member Ian Dick raffled a football shirt which raised £640.  He gave £320 to Lodge Bannockburn and £320 to Lodge Corkerhill in Glasgow.  Ian’s idea was for each to donate to a good cause.

We opted to support a veterans’ charity which led us to the Armed Forces Wives Club.  Chairperson Deborah Don said, “We really appreciate this generous donation from Bannockburn freemasons. It’s a great help in our mission to support forces wives.”

Deborah started the group some six years ago.  She saw that while wives are essential to an effective armed forces, there wasn’t official support to them- like there is for serving personnel.  This is despite the fact that an army wife can have much to deal with from loneliness and regularly setting up home to partners with PTSD.

The group meet in the King Robert Hotel on the last Sunday of each month.  They provide everything from a listening ear and camaraderie to fundraising for armed forces charities and, perhaps most importantly, practical help to women on every topic imaginable. The need has been proven because the group is now a UK-wide organisation. It’s all done by volunteers and relies totally on donations and fundraising.

If you are a current or ex-armed forces wife, partner, divorcee or widow and you want to know more you can contact Deborah at dondeborah153@gmail.com.
