Today, 20 May 2026, the Lodge continued our support to the Cenotaph gardeners for a third year with a donation of £312.
Dodging the showers, Right Worshipful Master Kenneth R. Shaw presented our cheque to Jimmy Cairney, as fellow gardener Joe Smith grafted away keeping the garden beautiful.
Jimmy (aka ‘Old Yin’) and Joe are joined in the gardens by two more volunteers, Brian Ford and Mike Grattan. They’ve done a magnificent job since their 2021 beginnings. You’ll see them on Monday and Friday mornings, weather permitting, weeding, planting, and tending to the cenotaph and its surrounds. Their labours make this focal point for the town extra special bathed in colour. Indeed, this band of brothers develop and improve the area with, for example, the addition of the pergolas.
Jimmy said, “We thank Lodge Bannockburn Bruce and Thistle No. 312 for their substantial donations over the last three years. It enables us to buy more and better plants and tools. We can always welcome more volunteers so please get in touch if you’d like to help us.”
Lodge Master Kenneth R. Shaw added, “It’s essential to remember all who gave the ultimate sacrifice in armed conflicts. The cenotaph volunteers make sure the town’s place of reflection and remembrance is tended to a very high standard. All of Bannockburn is in their debt. A main principle of freemasonry is supporting local good causes so our brethren were unanimous in agreeing this donation to the cenotaph gardeners.”
